Poems for hard times

Post by 笑嘻嘻 » 2010-04-05 2:07

我曾经的旧粉顶有生意头脑的 Garrison Keillor 有书《Good poems for hard times》他编辑的诗集。

Wild honey smells like freedom,
And dust like a ray of sunshine,
A young girl's mouth, like violets
While gold smells of nothing at all.
But we have learned one fact for ever:
Blood only smells like blood

Howards End is on the Landing

On either side the river lie,Long fields of barley and of rye。

是那个the mirror cracked from side to side?

:worthy:

Daffodils
- a poem by by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

The lady of Shalott:

God in His grace, lend her beauty.

God in his mercy lend her grace

"On either side the river lie,Long fields of barley and of rye。" 这句还挺像现代诗的,我还挺喜欢的,“God in his mercy lend her grace” 就不是那么有感觉。

Grace

Grace (see also Divine Grace):
1 a : unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification b : a virtue coming from God c : a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace

3 a : a charming or attractive trait or characteristic b : a pleasing appearance or effect : charm <all the grace of youth — John Buchan> c : ease and suppleness of movement or bearing

我还挺喜欢那句的,我是说god in his mercy lend her grace。

To an Athlete Dying Young
by A. E. Housman (1859-1936) (Poem written in honor of those slain in the Boer War.)
“The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high…

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose…

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man…”
The Street
by Leonard Cohen
I used to be your favorite drunk
Good for one more laugh.
Then we both ran out of luck
And luck was all we had.
You put on a uniform
To fight the civil war
I tried to join but no one liked
The side I’m fighting for.

So let’s drink to when it’s over
And let’s drink to when we meet
I’ll be waiting on this corner
Where there used to be a street
Let's swim to the moon,
Let's climb through the tide
Penetrate the evenin' that the
City sleeps to hide

Let's swim out tonight, love
It's our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive

Let's swim to the moon,
Let's climb through the tide
Surrender to the waiting worlds
That lap against our side

Nothin' left open
And no time to decide
We've stepped into a river
On our moonlight drive
He looked like a small panther, and he moved like a patch of night.

I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Masquerade

Tangled cusps of heather in the wisping nighttime gladness
Dance their way through daylight dreams to sober woken sadness
And through the curtains playing at a midnight dance reprieve
Is a furry cunning wonderment's surprises to believe:

It's not for it or you or I to grudgingly atone
For whispered words that dreams interred with melodies unknown
For as the dawning darkness fumbles joy unto its own
I stumble into you in truth my youth at last at home

The skin begins to live again when breaking into scales
A dirty truth which begs the proof that winking life prevails
Upon the laughing harlequin who moans the lonely tale
Of broken ships that time forgets beyond the ocean pale

The last forsaken memory forgot its own charade
And came alive to dance perchance when reveries were played
Upon the harp which fell apart as harmonies betrayed
The lovely life that winks at you beyond this masquerade
