Rick Santorum LOST his seat. Cheers

Post by 猫咪头 » 2006-05-08 15:48

Sen. Rick Santorum, a strong voice for conservatives who rose to be the No. 3 Senate Republican, lost his seat, finally.

And Stephen Colbert suggest he should do more than lip-service for his anti-stem-cell-research and anti-abortion stand, with womb tranplantaion technology on the horizon.

I haven't be this gleeful for a long time. :admir001: :music004: :admir001: :music004:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Previously) Honey, I will risk your life to prove my point

Introducting: Rick Santorum, US Senitor form Pennsylvania
who sport a pro-life voting record.
Voted NO on $100M to reduce teen pregnancy by education & contraceptives. (Mar 2005)
Voted YES on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime. (Mar 2004) PASSED
Voted YES on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life. (Mar 2003) PASSED
Voted YES on maintaining ban on Military Base Abortions. (Jun 2000) PASSED
Voted YES on banning partial birth abortions. (Oct 1999) amended and PASSED
Voted YES on banning human cloning. (Feb 1998) PASSED

Santorum has said he is personally against abortion.
How personal?

In 1996, the senitor and his wife were informed that the fetus she was carring suffered a fatal defect. Even if born alive, the baby, they were told, would not be viable. Infections ensued, and with his wife’s life in jeopardy, physicians asked the senator to consider an abortion. The senator, as he reported in a press conference afterward, never even came close to accepting that option. As he put it, his wife Karen Garver Santorum “was in danger of septic shock... but she was not in imminent danger”.

The couple already had three young children, but this fourth birth was given clear priority over his wife’s well-being as well as that of her other children.
Fortunately, the mother survived. (But the new baby she risked her life for, as doctors predicted, died shortly after birth.)

Now he goes on attacking “Roe v. Wade.” (you know what this is, right? In this land of freedom, we don’t have any specific writing stating abortion is legal, only a prior to discourage/prohibit punishment of those who chose abortion)
Oh, freedom, Sen. Rick Santorum claims “Life comes before freedom, and our founding fathers knew this.”

Image

Sen. Rick Santorum holds the No. 3 leadership post in the Senate GOP caucus.
In other news, Sen.Santorum has expressed disapproval of homosexuality. In 2001, Santorum tried unsuccessfully to insert language into the No Child Left Behind bill that would have required "a full range of views"--i.e. Intelligent design be taught in science classrooms in public schools

What are we to do? We can not just cry "what a loser" and let him be. This is a United States Senate.

Elections for the United States Senate will be held on November 7, 2006. Sen.Rick Santorum is up for reelection for six-year terms.
Last year, the pool stated Santorum at 41% and Casey at 52%, but early 2006, the wind shifted, now Santorum lead the pool at 70%.

If re-elected his term of office will be from January 3, 2007 until January 3, 2013.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karen, thing are worse than we thought.

Not only is the criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime passed and became common law;

the bill banning late term abortions except for maternal life also passed the 1/2 vote required on March 13, 2003, and is on its way to become Public Law No: 108-105

Here is the voting summary. I urge those of us with the power to vote, please pay close attention to these politicians who are taking away our human rights.

Voted YES on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime. (Mar 2004)
Did this pass? I know this bill is the first step to granting legal status to fetus, to be used later to facilitate Republican's agenda to ban abortion all togeher.

When is the re-election? I heard Santorum is doing pretty badly, and is likely to be replaced by Casey, a Democrat. Too bad Casey is also pro-life. Well, it's Penn... what do you expect.

The bill passed, and since became Public Law No: 108-212

H.R.1997
Title: To amend title 18, United States Code, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice to protect unborn children from assault and murder, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Rep Hart, Melissa A. [PA-4] (introduced 5/7/2003) Cosponsors (136)
Related Bills: H.RES.529, S.1019
Latest Major Action: Became Public Law No: 108-212
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HR01997:

The bill states that its provisions should not be interpreted to apply a woman's actions with respect to her pregnancy.

Yet, you know, we are one small step closer.

Last itme I checked, Santorum's pool and rating is pretty high.

With such a personal story and strong family bound, there are talks about running for presidency in 2008. He declined so far, saying "no yet ready".

:? The fight is about something bigger than abortion. Afterall, nobody wants an abortion, and we all want to reduce the number.

Pro-choice people aim to reduce unwanted pregnancy by education and providing free contraceptives. But this is not enough for the pro-lifers. they just want to ban it and tell kids abstinence is the only way to go. I think it's a fight on idealogy. The Christians just love to tell people different from them that they are going to hell.

Yeah, Tiff, people who think it's ridiculous don't want to deal with it. :? We think it's so ridiculous that, surely, an enlightened democratic society won't make it a reality. Meanwhile the Christian conservatives are relentless in their push to make this a reality for all of us. Covering our eyes ain't gonna make it go away.

Karen I agree with you. This is about ideology. The Christian fundamentalist movement has been at a grassroot campaign in this country for decades, as a response to the perceived "moral decline" of the society since the 60s and 70s. This has been a long, systematic, persistent, all-front effort. 9/11 gave them all the more power, because the perceived threat from (loud but not necessarily powerful) Islamic fundamentalist movement only scares people into relinquishing more power to the Christian fundamentalists. In their mind, it is war, a holy war to take back America.

That is why the House, Senate, White House, and now Supreme Court are ALL run by ultraconservative Republicans. Moderate Republicans have been coerced into their positions. John McCain, for example, is going to give a commencement speech at a Jerry Fawell venue.

We must remember that it is not a few politicians who are moving the country toward banning abortion; taking away women's rights, free speech, personal choice and freedom; erecting Ten Commendments in courts; reinstituting school prayers; force teaching the Bible in public schools (already happening in Georgia under the disguise of school-sponsored extracurricular activity) etc., etc. Behind these congressmen are millions of average American people who urge them to vote YEAH on these bills. It is too easy to blame a few politicians who are elected by and acting on their constituents' wishes.

This is not about telling nonbelievers that they are going to hell. This is no different from what any religious fanatics's aim --- to build their own god's kingdom on earth, to rule all living people with the law of the Lord.

Yeah, behind every ultra-conservative Republican in the Congress/Senate, there are hundreds of thousands, even millions, of constituents who think just like they do. :gros_yeux_tristes: They don't get voted to office for nothing.

There is this false sense of modernity in our society. I look around, everyone googles, talks on a Razer, and uses Tivo. Surely technology innovations that brought us the digital age would also push the culture toward something more tolerant. In reality, that's not true. Moral values of this society remain archaic.

Yes, ex-senitor, now you've got plenty of time , you can save one of those embryos you claimed to be saving by carry a baby to term inside youself. And remember, no abortion even if your life is threatoned.
